Auditions: The 39 Steps

​SYNOPSIS:
Based on the adventure novel and Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, The 39 Steps follows Richard Hannay, a man bored with his life who happens to meet a beautiful woman claiming to be a spy. She warns him of a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” before she is murdered — and Hannay soon realizes that “The 39 Steps” are now after him! The play relies on the skills of four talented actors to portray more than 150 characters between them, bringing this parody of an old-fashioned detective story to life.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS:

Richard Hannay
Age: Mid 20s to mid 40s.
Description: Sophisticated and dashing Englishman who becomes embroiled in a web of espionage and intrigue. Charismatic, quick-witted and capable.

Annabella Schmidt/Margaret/Pamela
Age: Mid 20s to mid 40s.
Description: This character is played by a single actress who portrays three female roles: Annabella Schmidt, a mysterious spy; Margaret, a Scottish farmer's wife; and Pamela, a cool and resourceful Englishwoman. Versatile, enacting changes in accent and demeanor. 

Clown 1  
Description: Any age/gender. Mr. Memory, Innkeeper, Policemen, etc. Ability to embody a wide range of characters with distinct physicalities, accents, mannerisms, and personalities.

Clown 2 
Description: Any age/gender. Compere, Professor, Scottish Farmer, etc. Ability to embody a wide range of characters with distinct physicalities, accents, mannerisms, and personalities.
